A11y Essentials
This section covers the background you need to understand and fix accessibility issues. The validation entries often link here, when an issue makes more sense with some context, or when confirming it requires an assistive technology you may not have used before. No prior experience with accessibility is needed.
Understand the people affected
- Personas: who is affected by accessibility issues, how people with disabilities use websites and mobile apps, and which barriers they commonly face. Every entry's "Personas impacted by this issue" box links here.
Write accessible code
- HTML Semantics and Accessibility: why choosing the right HTML element matters, and how native elements prevent many ARIA issues before they appear.
- Relationships Between ARIA Roles and Attributes: which ARIA attributes each role requires, supports, inherits, or prohibits, and which validations check them.
- HTML Landmarks: what landmarks are, the rules the landmark validations check, and how to structure a page so every landmark does its job.
- Writing Effective Text Alternatives for Images: how to identify an image's type, and how to write alt text for informative, functional, decorative, and complex images.
Test with assistive technology
- Practical guides for using screen readers: what screen readers are and how they work, with hands-on guides for NVDA on Windows, VoiceOver on Mac, VoiceOver on iOS, and TalkBack on Android.
- Practical guides for using voice input: how voice input software works, with hands-on guides for Voice Control on iOS and Voice Access on Android.
The guides are written for beginners. Each one shows you how to stay in control, and walks you through a short test you can run on your own website or app.
